Tips for a balanced lifestyle

A well balanced life is essential for personal effectiveness, peace of mind and living well.
Whether we work, go to school or are retired, we all have responsibilities. There is always someone, or something to answer to. There thing we want to do and things we must do. The challenge is to find balance between the two to maintain a state of well-being, when we are out of harmony we can encounter physical and/or emotional health consequences. Here are my 5 tips for a balanced lifestyle:

 

Gratitude:

Being grateful for even the smallest things in life can be one of the most enhancing things we do to our life. When we are more grateful we become more abundant, because we have more things to be grateful for rather than focussing on we don't have. One of my amazing yoga teachers and most inspiring people I have ever met once showed me an exercise called the 'beggars bowl'. Where you sit for even just a short amount of time and put everything you are grateful into this bowl, (I like to do this first thing in the morning). It can be anything from good health, friends, loving family, clean drinking water, a roof over your head, and the list goes on. Notice how the your bowl begins to fill and notice all the blessings around you and how you feel. Notice the changes in your life once you start to show gratitude for the things you have.

 

Self Love:

When we are able to love ourselves fully only then ,we are then able to love others. I never understood what all this meant until one of my most amazing mentors said to me one day, "you need to treat yourself as your own best friend". When we ridicule ourselves with negative self talk, we send out negative vibrations in to our own energetic field. We wouldn't expect our own best friends to say the thoughts and things that run through our thought pattern, so why should we say these to our self? When we can take time to fully love our self as we are, with compassion and kindness treating our self with respect and honour then the others around us will begin to treat us the same. It is only then we are fully able to love others.

 

Compassion:

Taking the time to be compassionate to your self and to others will help you develop a deep understanding why people might act or do things in a certain way. When we are more compassionate the world becomes a better place. To be able to take the time to really listen to someone or be their shoulder to lean on, you can open a sense of connection and human interaction with another being that is open to healing. To heal others, heals yourself. 

 

Kindness:

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. When we show more kindness to ourselves and others it creates a ripple effect. Whether it be helping the lady at the shopping centre to return the shopping trolley or smiling at the homeless person in the street, when we act with kindness it leaves the person with a feeling of being acknowledged and cared for. To often in our western society we are so focussed in our own little bubble that we become more and more disconnected, where basic human function is to feel love and belonging.

 

Empathy:

Empathy is linked with compassion although empathy is the ability to feel what the other person is feeling. When we are able to be empathic towards another we are then able to feel and deepen our understanding of that other persons emotions. To be empathetic to is to deepen your connection with others and really be there for them. To be a good listener to really take the time with another. Do you remember how nice it felt when someone was really there for you last? When they really took the time for you? Isn't it such a gift for someone to just be there.
